Freecycle.org

Freecycle.org is a network of people all around the world broken up into local groups that are dedicated to recycling items instead of throwing them away.

The way it works is that someone who has something that they do not need any more logs into their local group and posts a message saying what they have that they don’t need any more. If someone else finds that item useful, they will contact the person who has the item, and the two of them will arrange to exchange the item. I have seen books, movies, TV’s, furniture, clothes, and anything else that you can think of could be posted on this website. Just because you don’t need something anymore, doesn’t mean that it is trash. Remember, one persons trash is another person’s treasure. If everyone participated in this program, or one like it, could you imagine how much less stuff would go to our landfills every year?

I think it is just such a wonderful idea that all people should consider when they want to get rid of things they don’t want, they should find a way to donate them or have a network like you do. There has been times that usable items have been tossed out on the curb prior to or on garbage day and I keep an eye out for anything salvagable that I can, you could say rescue from going to the land fill. Can you imagine large plastic items such as a patio chair, like the one I picked up today, being put in a land fill? I know that if they are broken there is not much you can do about that if it’s not recycable. If these things are in still usable condition then why not pick it up. If I wouldn’t use it, I’d either ask around to my friends and neighbors if they want it or else take it in to be donated. Sometimes too if I come across a good find, I have even sold it myself. What is the cost you could put on the options of what to do with unwanted items? Throw them in the trash and eventually see a land fill in your backyard, (which I don’t think anybody would be too excited about that idea or reality) or figure out how to make it usable again, and making an effort to avoid putting it in the trash? I really would like to convince more people to ask themselves about the harsh reality that we could face if we continue our WASTEFUL practices. Doesn’t anybody care what our children and our grandchildren are going to have to face in the future? Will they be asking amongst themselves when they realize what a mess we’ve left for them didn’t our parents love us enough? I think everyone needs to really consider what we are doing to our environment while being such a materialistic throwaway society! Do we just let things go because that’s just the way it is and has been, or do we start doing our own damage control before it’s too late? The consequnces of our actions has not only effected our children and their choices but also the innocence of animals and plants, our water, soil and air. How is it all going to be suitable for our children and grandchildren. How are their lives going to be effected by our present choices in the future? That concerns me greatly. I am greatful for the groups and individuals who are making a change and who are not ignorant to the fact that our very existence and being is being threatened. I believe having things isn’t everything and that God put us in charge of what He has given to us and that we need to good stewards of what we have. I am pleased that I’m not the only one who thinks and believes strongly in this. Enough said, there are people that don’t have much, but they are probably more blessed than someone who has everything or at least close to it. Thank you.
